Empathy is a term often heard in leadership circles but rarely explored in depth. So what does it actually mean?

Empathy is understanding another person's views by putting yourself in their shoes, without rushing to judge or offer advice. Embracing empathy helps us stay grounded by integrating diverse perspectives into our understanding of reality. The key to developing empathy is good listening and asking open-ended questions that help you reach a deeper understanding.

Empathy is not about agreeing to please others, avoiding conflict, or blending in with the crowd. It's about respecting others' perspectives while still asserting your own views and boundaries. It allows others to succeed without you compromising your own values or beliefs.

Yet, despite its immense benefits, people struggle to exercise empathy in daily life. Fast-paced lifestyles, biases, and self-interest often create barriers to it. This article explores the significant consequences of neglecting empathy — consequences that can add up to a less fulfilling life.

You risk making bad decisions

If you shut down criticism, control conversations, or dismiss differing opinions, you lose the path to finding the truth — an essential element of sound decision-making.

We need to acknowledge that our minds, senses, and bodies have inherent limitations. We can't access all the information available at a given time, nor can we practise absolute objectivity. Success can blind us, and failure can discourage us. It's critical to stay grounded in these situations in order to make the right decision.

Empathy keeps you open to questions by making you aware of your own weaknesses. It helps you not only build a good team but also keep critics close — people who can spot the grey areas in your decisions before they lead to unrecoverable loss.

You have difficulty dealing with people

We all have an ego — an emotional, reactive part of the brain — and most of the time, we aren't even aware of our own. As a result, we react to situations that don't favour us, such as conflict, often with uncontrolled emotion. These reactions get in the way of building relationships anywhere.

Empathy helps you recognise that, just like yours, other people's egos also have their limits. You come to understand that an ego tells you a perspective, not the truth. You learn to expect in advance that some egos may misbehave, manipulate, or try to use you — and this early preparation helps you respond calmly and with controlled emotion when it happens.

You struggle to balance emotion and rationality

Life is best lived with a balance of rationality and emotion. We move through various settings simultaneously — personal relationships, family, friends, business — and each calls for a different balance. We can't let emotion cloud our judgement in business, but too much rationality in family matters can make relationships feel cold.

Empathy empowers you to understand the context of every setting from a deeper angle, so you can calibrate the right amount of each. Business, for example, might call for something like 90% rationality and 10% emotion, while family might call for closer to 50/50.

Conclusion

Personal growth is a journey, not a final destination, and that journey starts with developing awareness of our inner selves. While we've explored some of the key areas where a lack of empathy can cost us a great deal, it's worth remembering that empathy touches every aspect of life. By embracing it, we not only foster deeper connections with others but also strengthen our own emotional intelligence — ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.

When business owners think about growth, one of the fundamental questions they need to answer is whether to chase volume or value. Both strategies have their place, but understanding when each makes sense can determine whether growth is sustainable or short-lived.

In general, it is value that serves the long-term outcome for a business. A value-based strategy helps build a sustainable competitive advantage. When customers recognise that a product or service is genuinely adding value to their own business, the money they spend shifts in their mind from being an expense to being an investment — and an investment is always easier to justify than an expense. Value also has another advantage: unlike product features, it is generally not directly comparable across competitors. This makes it much harder for rivals to draw customers away simply by matching or undercutting on price, which in turn reduces the risk of getting pulled into a competitive bidding war and having to give up margins to stay in the game.

That said, especially when starting out, entering new markets, or taking new products to market, it often makes sense to focus on volume instead. There are a few good reasons for this. The most important is that volume gives you the ability to test your product with a large and diverse set of customers, generating feedback that can be used to improve the product. Volume is also a confidence builder — if customers are willing to pay, it's a strong signal that you've found genuine product-market fit. And, of course, higher volume means money coming in sooner, which helps cover expenses in the early stages when a business is most cash-constrained.

There is one other situation where a volume-based strategy can make sense even for a more established business: when operating in a late-stage or highly competitive market. If you're confident that greater scale will allow you to bring down costs, then pursuing volume can be the right call. It's worth keeping in mind, though, that a volume-based strategy tends to demand a lot of resources, so it's not a decision to be taken lightly.

The airline industry is a good example of an industry where you can see both strategies playing out at opposite ends of the spectrum. Singapore Airlines is a classic case of a value-based strategy, built around a relentless focus on customer experience. At the other end sits the low-cost carrier model, pioneered by Southwest. Southwest effectively set out to compete not with other airlines but with the car — a distinctly high-volume segment. Their strategy relied on shorter, point-to-point destinations and a no-frills approach: essentially a low-cost solution that simply did the job of getting passengers from A to B. This was underpinned by a genuinely low-cost operating model — flying a single aircraft type to reduce training, spares, and maintenance costs, and stripping out extras like seat allocation and much of the human service layer.

When deciding whether to focus on volume or value, there are several factors that business owners should consider — the industry they are in, the target market they are trying to reach, and the resources they have available to them. By weighing all these factors, business owners can make an informed decision on what approach best suits their business.

It is also possible to switch from one strategy to the other, though this generally only happens once within a particular product lifecycle. If you have started with a volume strategy, switching to value makes sense once you've tested the market and identified the unique value you deliver. Equally, if you have been pursuing a value strategy and the market matures with competition snapping at your heels, you may find the potential to switch to a volume strategy instead.

In summary, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to whether business owners should focus on volume or value. It really depends on the unique circumstances and goals of the business. The key is to weigh the pros and cons of each approach and decide which one makes the most sense at that particular stage.
