IIT Bhubaneswar & VCU Researchers Predict New 2D Material for Faster, Lighter Electronics
Researchers at IIT Bhubaneswar, working with Virginia Commonwealth University (US), have theoretically predicted a new two-dimensional material — a FeCl₃ monolayer exhibiting a rare form of magnetism called i-wave altermagnetism — that could help make future electronic devices smaller, faster and more power-efficient. The work, led by Dr Manish Kumar Mohanta, an ANRF Ramanujan faculty member in IIT Bhubaneswar's physics department, has been published in the journal Nano Letters. Potential applications include high-density memory, spin-based transistors, terahertz communication and quantum information systems. It's currently a theoretical prediction rather than a synthesised material, but points toward a promising direction for next-gen low-power electronics.
