IIT Alumni Community in the UK
I guess we have always known that we have a strong IIT presence here in the UK and I get quite some varied estimates from people that I ask.
While it is going to be impossible to ever measure that accurately, I have done a bit a research and here are my findings.
Based on my search on LinkedIn, there are approximately 6000 people in the UK who have listed one of the IITs in their Education section.
I analysed about 2000 of these in a little more detail to determine the IITs they graduated from and the type of degrees. I suspect that this is a good enough sample to assume the distribution will remain similar in the rest of the cohort.
Here are the details.
IIT Delhi has the largest cohort here, but closely followed by IIT Bombay and Kharagpur. There are a few IITs yet to be represented here – we hope to welcome them soon.
Note: There are a number of people from multiple IITs and they are counted in each.
Fun fact: There is one person in the UK who has three Degrees with each being from a different IIT ! – Dhanbad, Kanpur and Madras.
We also have a pretty even distribution between Graduates and Post Graduates in our cohort. I think this has been helped considerably due to the Integrated Master’s programs in the various IITs.
And lastly, if you are wondering which graduation year has the largest presence in the UK, all those you graduated in 2013 – go ahead celebrate!

Happy to see a common platform to interact with fellow IITians working in UK. I Would like to appreciate Shankar for his initiation, contribution and leadership in building this platform.
It could be better if plots are more readable and dynamic like mouse hover features, zoom out/in.
And I suspect Y axis value in last plot, say number of IITians in a graduation year. I think total sample value in this diagram is not close to whole population 6000.
Looking forward to meet every one.
Cheers,
Ravi

Thanks for the kind words, Ravi, but I can’t take the credit for this platform. The Alumni Association started out back in early 2000’s – have only recently got actively involved.
The sample for the data used is closer to 2000 IITians – those LinkedIn profiles that I have looked into more detail.

Hi Shankar,
Thank you for efforts. Don’t think IIT UK has been this active before. Lots of innovative ideas. Indeed, the statistics have come out for the first time. I think the earlier generation of IITians mostly went to the US so the numbers here are much less. Besides, there a lot more IITians per year now and increasing! Once again thanks for enlivining this community.

My name is Prachi Sinha and I arrived in London 6 days ago with my husband. I did MBA from IIT Delhi (DMS) and worked for IIT Delhi for Institute of Eminence. My husband works with NatWest Bank while I will be looking for a job.
It feels great to be connected with the community.
Hoping to have more interactions with the members.

Hi Shankar,
Great efforts in creating this platform. I have worked as a Research intern at IIT Mumbai in 2012. Moved to UK 2 months back and currently based out of Hertfordshire. Looking forward to interact with all of you. Thank you.

Hello Shankar,
Thank you so much for introducing me to this community. Me and my wife graduated from IIT-BHU in 2014 and 2015 respectively and we moved to UK recently in May 2022.
I am so glad to be a part and looking forward to interacting with people here. I have transitioned from working in IT to working as a health and fitness professional.

Excellent analysis; both interesting and insightful. Kudos to the super IITian with the three degrees (getting one in itself is hard enough!).
With regards to the 2013 batch with the highest number of alumni in the UK, I wonder if it takes a certain time after graduation to decide to move to another country (higher learning / research / job opportunities), Will be curious to see if 2013 batch has the highest number the next year as well. If 2013 remains at the top consistently, wonder what event(s) has led to the drastic fall in the number of IITians moving to the UK.

Look forward to seeing you at the events soon.

Hi Shankar and all,
Personally, I feel that the recent multi-city “Networking drink” or any other future IITAA UK program should be organized on the weekend, that would make participation from fellow members much easier. If not, then Friday evening could be a ‘kind of’ alternative, but definitely not Thursday. Please consider, if you feel reasonable.

Thanks for your feedback, Ranjeet.
Will take it into consideration and maybe poll the wider community before the next one.
